What do the colors of the flag of Finland represent?

The flag of Finland is a version of Scandinavian Cross. The Finnish version - in blue and white for lakes and snowscapes - was first adopted in 1863, the same year that Finnish was recognized as the official language. (Devereux, Eve: Identifying flags-1994)
