I'd like to know political Karelianist's work which assert the establishment of Greater Finland by annexation of Eastern Karelia. 1049 Karelianism is mostly understood to mean the powerful artistic movement, which prevailed at the turn of the century. At that time one of its aims was to bolster the nascent independence movement in Finland, which was still under Tsarist Russia. Finland was a Russian Grand Duchy until Lenin granted Finland independence in 1917. The reasons for Finland’s territorial expansionism are many and varied. Despite the bitter political and emotional scars that resulted from the fierce civil war between the reds and the whites in 1917-1918, Finland was able to unite in the face of the common enemy and fought the Soviet army during the so-called Winter War in 1939-1940. Although the odds were overwhelming against the Finnish army, it was able to...

My question is: the city of Turku has honoured a famous dutchman. Do you know the name of the person? Thanks for the effort. Greetings from Holland. 1043 There is a street called Peter Thorwöste road in Turku. Peter Thorwöste was a dutchman, who lived in Turku in the 17th century, and died here 1659. He was a well-known tradesman and industrialist, he founded for example ironworks in Fiskars. Some further information about Fiskars you can find here: http://www.fiskars.fi/pdf/Fiskars_history_eng.pdf Could this Peter Thorwöste be "the famous dutchman" you are looking for? If he is not, could you please give us more information about the man you are trying to identify. When did he live? What did he do for living?

Dear Sir/Madam, I'm doing a small marketing research about Finnish hair salons and barber shops and I faced one question that I have been searching for for a… 1038 There is information about barber shops and hair salons at Tilastokeskus (Statistics Finland) web pages. Year 2012 was the newest I found, and then there were 13 706 hairdressers and barbers in Finland ( http://pxweb2.stat.fi/Dialog/varval.asp?ma=061_tyokay_tau_161&path=../d… ) Verohallinto (Tax Administration) tells there were 12 283 barber and hairdressing businesses in Finland in the same year 2012.
We borrowed a disc from the library (code: 30091034533656) and brought it to our summer cottage in Loppi to watch. Our DVD player display shows the message… 1036 Certainly our DVD "Risto Räppääjä" should be possible to play anywhere, not only in Helsinki. If you tried to play the disc in the right device (DVD player), then I cannot tell, what is the problem. The disc is quite new, but of course you can try to wipe the disc only with a cotton cloth (without water or any cleaner). Or then there is some problem with your player maybe - you can try, if it plays some other DVDs.
I'm an a American Student at the Kent State School of Library and Information Science in the United States. I'm interested in working in Finnish libraries. I… 1035 Your question is a bit difficult to answer since i do'nt know the american library work, but in general i guess that the differences are'nt very significant. We use decimal classification, but not the same in university libraries and public libraries. Both are developed similarly to Dewey decimal classification, so the classification system should'nt be a problem. University libraries, special libaries and public libraries use different kinds of systems in acquisition of materials, cataloguing, shelving, but nothing so radically different, that it would'nt be comprehensible to a librarian. The new trends in library work and material are much the same as in the United States. I would guess that the biggest challenge in working in a Finnish...
Is there a library I can use in holidays (sundays)? Itäkeskus library has a study room (for 48 persons), but the library is in East-Helsinki. Kallio (study room for 8 persons) and Töölö (study room for almost 100 persons) Libraries are both quite near Pasila so perhaps You'll find other or both of them suitable for Your purposes.
My kids(2.8y and 1.3y) and I are traveling to Helsinki during May 2-9. I am wondering if there is a library in Helsinki with toddlars playing/reading area… 1031 In Helsinki there are several libraries that have a special children’s department, for example Pasila, Kallio, Töölö, Rikhardinkatu, Itäkeskus and Vuosaari libraries. Children’s departments have a large collection of fairytales and picture books in several languages as well as some toys and puzzles. Also smaller libraries without children’s department have books for children. Good evening, I would like to ask a question about financing of finnish public libraries. I know that there is only three sources for libraries -… 1029 The basic division between state and municipal finance for libraries is 34.08% (state) and 65.92% (municipality). As of 1st January 2010, state subsidy for any given municipality is 54,63€ per inhabitants. These figures are from the Finnish language pages of the Ministry of Education. However, since the Ministry of Education is in charge of monitoring public library activities, you may contact the ministry for more information, especially concerning any possible EU funds. http://www.minedu.fi/OPM/Kirjastot/?lang=en As for outside funding, we could not find any statistics. Situations may vary considerably from one community to another. In some communities and municipalities there might be close cooperation with educational institutes, if...
What is the semantic web ? 1028 The Semantic Web vision was conceived by Tim Berners-Lee, the inventor of the World Wide Web. He calls it the next step in Web evolution. It uses XML tags and is sometimes called web 3.0.
