Tarkalleen ottaen menneilläkään vuosikymmenillä ei opetettu käyttämään monikkomuotoista verbiä (tai jos opetettiin, opetus oli virheellistä). Ilmauksessa "If I were" verbi ei ole monikkomuodossa, vaan kyseessä on konjunktiivi (engl. subjunctive). Sylvia Chalkerin teos Current English Grammar kertoo seuraavaa:
There are few subjunctive forms in modern English, which usually finds other ways of indicating that the events being talked about are uncertain or hypothetical. There are two types of subjunctive:
